‘Dubliners....and Other Faces’
Opening 6pm Thursday 21st October 2010
Wine and music reception
www.powerscourtgallery.com
Frank Kiely’s Dublin work is inspired by the early writings of James Joyce, and the questions Joyce poses of life in the capital city. These are questions Kiely wrestles within himself; love, adventure, ageing, betrayal and death. For Kiely ambiguity is the only answer. He sees these themes reoccurring in his Irish life: in his family and friends. His work is not exclusively Dublin-centric but includes works from other places and stories of other faces; Galway, London, Irish fiction and folklore.

Crow's Last Stand. Ted Hughes
Powerscourt Gallery is proud to host James Kenny’s boutique show ‘Littleblood’ from 30th September 2010 until 12th October 2010.
This series of works on paper are inspired by the Poems of Ted Hughes, the tribes of Crows that populate my home town of Greystones, Co Wicklow, and the materials that they are created with”.
“Expressionistic and spontaneous, I allow my chosen materials their own free will, corralling and controlling them as well as I am able as they spill across the page in their own exuberant way, coalescing into the image of Crow, who stands defiant on the page, proud yet ragged, on stick thin legs, flightless”. (James Kenny)
‘Littleblood’ will be launched in the Powerscourt Gallery on Thursday 30th September 2010, 6-8pm, Wine reception and music.
RSVP: art@powerscourtgallery.com
James Kenny’s show will run until Tuesday 12th October 2010.

Keith Seybert’s “Hearts and Minds” exhibition now at Powerscourt Gallery:
The title, “Hearts and Minds” harkens back to the distinction drawn by the philosopher Plato, between the heart and the mind; between emotion and thought; a false dichotomy if modern trends in cognitive psychology are to be believed.
The phrase "winning the hearts and minds" has, through incessant repetition in recent years, become indelibly linked with counterinsurgency objectives implemented in pursuit of an interventionist foreign policy. For example, the U.S. Army and Marine Corps’ Counterinsurgency Field Manual, states that, "Protracted popular war is best countered by winning the 'hearts and minds' of the populace."
The objects in this exhibition were inspired by considering these accepted meanings and the images and phrases generated by this process. Some are more playful and humorous; others take a darker tone. But all, I trust, will provoke a thoughtful engagement of material and meaning.
In this Thursday's Powerscourt Gallery artist talk, the Irish-based Japanese-Californian artist Jimmy T. Murakami will discuss his award-winning international career in film
and animation. Also his current work as an artist, including paintings from his camp series. These camp paintings are based on Murakami's childhood experience of living in a Japanese American "War Relocation Camp" in California as part of the forcible relocation and internment in 1942 of approximately 110,000 Japanese nationals and Japanese Americans to such camps in the wake of Imperial Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor.
A film sponsored by the Irish arts council on Jimmy T. Murakami's life is due out in February 2010.
Powerscourt Gallery’s first show ‘Calling Card’ is a summer group exhibition showing selected works from ten invited artists. Displaying a diverse range of styles and media including batik, painting, sculpture and print, the exhibition is an eclectic and interesting mix that shows the Powerscourt Gallery and the artists off to their full advantage.
